North Wales Police officer caught at 98mph in 50 limit

North Wales Police officer caught at 98mph in 50 limit

A POLICEMAN yesterday claimed a 50mph speed limit wasn’t enforceable when he did 98mph in a police car – because signs were unlit.

Sgt Craig Nicholas Jones, 40, an organised crime officer, had been taking a prisoner from Colwyn Bay to Caernarfon along the A55 when he was caught late at night, a court at Llandudno heard. But he denied speeding.

His barrister Simon Gurney claimed the 50mph signs on the stretch of road at Colwyn Bay should have been illuminated “and fall foul of the regulations.”

OUR brave soldiers in Afghanistan have sent heartfelt Christmas messages to their loved ones back home in North Wales.

They are among the thousands of servicemen and women who continue to risk their lives in order to make the world a safer place.

The 500-strong reinforcements ordered to the war-torn country by Prime Minister Gordon Brown have this month been deploying to Task Force Helmand which operates mainly in Helmand Province.

THOUSANDS of foreign drivers have escaped punishment after being caught speeding on North Wales roads this year.

A total of 2,360 vehicles with non-UK plates were caught hurtling past fixed speed cameras and Arrive Alive vans in the 12 months up to November 2009.

But no tickets were issued as a result, figures obtained by the Daily Post under the Freedom of Information Act reveal.

Economy shrinks less than thought

The latest figures show household spending rising

The UK economy did not contract as much as originally estimated in the July to September period, figures show.

The economy shrank by 0.2% in the third quarter. That compares with an earlier estimate of a 0.3% contraction.

However, the revision was not as big as had been expected by analysts, who had forecast a contraction of 0.1%.

The UK economy has been shrinking for six consecutive quarters and is lagging behind other countries, many of whom have already pulled out of recession.
