Scottish teenager beats Kenyan to win International Snowdon Race

Scottish teenager beats Kenyan to win International Snowdon Race

Robbie Simpson on his way to victory in the International Snowdon Race 2010

ALL eyes were on the Kenyan but it was the Scots who grabbed the spotlight at the 35th annual International Snowdon Race on Saturday.

To be fair to Wilson Chemweno, the reigning Commonwealth champion, it was expecting an awful lot of him to win the event after travelling from Nairobi and arriving in North Wales in the early hours of the morning.

The first half of the race went true to form, with the Kenyan first to reach the summit, but he was caught on the descent, finishing in seventh place.

Past to the future: Voyage towards a brighter future for Holyhead

Past to the future: Voyage towards a brighter future for Holyhead

HOLYHEAD has been through the wringer in recent years and the recession has hit the place hard.

Last year, the town suffered a hammer blow with the closure of Anglesey Aluminium with 400 job losses and, earlier in the year, the shedding of around 300 jobs at Eaton Electric.

Now townspeople must collectively keep their fingers crossed that Wylfa nuclear power station is rapidly replaced by a Wylfa B.

Yet the silver lining to the cloud is that you won’t find anywhere in North Wales with as much regeneration both planned and ongoing as at Holyhead.

A key problem has been the drab state of the town centre itself, its run-down atmosphere, empty shop units and poor range of goods on offer.

MPs back Government Academies Bill

MPs back Government Academies Bill

MPs have backed the Government's flagship Academies Bill which was rushed through Parliament in time for the start of the summer recess.

The Bill was passed by 317 votes to 225, Government majority 92, despite accusations it would lead to a "two-tier" education system and would damage comprehensive schooling.

It completed its Commons passage in an unusually short period and will allow for a radical overhaul of the school system in England.

The legislation aims to create the first of a new wave of academy schools, free from local authority control, to be in place in September.

It also paves the way for parents, charities and other organisations to set up controversial Swedish-style "free schools".

Lib Dems 'would snub coalition'

Lib Dems 'would snub coalition'

Four out of 10 Liberal Democrat voters would not have backed the party in the May General Election if they had known it would enter a coalition with the Conservatives, a poll suggests.

And 37% of Lib Dem voters quizzed for BBC2's Newsnight said they felt their party was being dishonest about cuts.

The survey of more than 1,000 voters, conducted last week, suggested that support for the coalition is far stronger among Conservatives than Lib Dems.

It came amid reports that senior Tory backbencher David Davis had privately referred to the alliance between David Cameron and Nick Clegg as the "Brokeback Coalition" - though the former shadow home secretary insisted this was misheard.
